Don’t be fooled by the sunny days we have been experiencing in the Northern Virginia area! While we love sunny days, we know that there is more rain coming our way.  As we begin hurricane season, we must be ready for the inevitable heavy showers. And what is a good way to prepare? By checking your gutters!

If you don’t pay too much attention to your gutters during the year, this is the time to pay attention. If you have faulty gutters, it could cause water damage and cause you a LOT of money. So let’s skip the big bill, grab a ladder and let’s begin by identifying potential gutter problems.

Cracks: Inspect for small cracks. You might not think a small crack is cause for concern but it is. The small crack could quickly turn into a big one.

Sagging: Sagging gutters are usually due to gutters full of water. Once they begin to sag they tend to pull away from the house. Usually this means that the gutter is not working properly since it’s not draining the water. It will have to be fixed or replaced.

Holes: You must replace your gutters once you find holes. Gutters are no longer functional this way.

Paint Peeling or Rust: The peeling paint is a sign of continuous moisture which means that your gutters are not doing their job. If you happen to have metallic gutters, you could see some rust. If you leave this unattended, the rust will travel with the snow and rain eventually causing permanent rust streaks on the side of your home.

Pools of Water: Have you seen any pools of water near the foundation of your home? If so, this is a problem. This is another sign of gutter malfunction.
