It happens to all families. You get the “itch” to move and you decide it’s time to find a new home. Whether you’re moving down the street, into the city or across the country, the reason you’re moving is probably because you want something different out of a future house. Your preferences have changed. But, regardless of what your preferences might be, all homebuyers should be looking at the same criteria when looking for their future buy. Here is our list of what is necessary to look for in a new home:

new home location

  1. Location – As mentioned above, you might be moving because you need to be closer in the city (or closer to work) or because you want to move out onto 5 acres of land. Whatever your reasoning, location is usually the most important factor in looking for a new home. You can change the paint colors, the fixtures, the landscaping, etc. But, you should always remember that the one thing you can’t change is your home’s location.
  2. Neighborhood – Although this goes along with the home’s location, a neighborhood can play a huge part in where you choose to live. In order to make sure that you and your family feel comfortable with the place you’re looking to buy, you should visit the home on different days and times of the week. See what the neighborhood looks like on a Monday morning and on a Saturday night. You need to be sure that you’re ready for any unexpected surprises from neighbors, guests or nearby businesses.
  3. Size – This is a given, but most people who are looking for a new home have a specific size in mind. If you know that you have trouble taking care of a 1,600 square foot home, then it probably isn’t smart to purchase one that is 2,800 square feet. You will grow exhausted of trying to keep the house taken care of and will eventually regret your decision. Know your limits.
  4. Layout – Although you can change many aspects of a home, (i.e. the lights, paint color, fixtures, finishes) there are some things you may not be able to change. Pay attention to important aspects of the layout that are permanent. If you like open floor plans, but there is a load-bearing wall that blocks the kitchen from the living and dining rooms, then you probably shouldn’t purchase the home.
